Norton Commando Interpol Tank with Radio Recess (part number 061764) — a genuine, original, factory-produced steel petrol tank from the Norton Commando Interpol police motorcycle. This is an exceptionally rare piece of Norton Commando history, now unavailable new from any supplier worldwide.

The Norton Commando Interpol program was developed by Neale Shilton specifically to meet UK and international police force requirements. First shown at the 1969 Brighton Bike Show and produced from 1970 through 1976, the Interpol was fitted out with Avon fairing, Craven panniers, police lights, and radio equipment. The Norton Commando Interpol Tank was purpose-built to house a police radio control unit, mounted directly using the threaded screw holes integrated into the radio recess on the tank top. These tanks are known to have been used by forces including Devon and Cornwall Police, the Metropolitan Police, and many other UK and international constabularies.

The radio recess version (061764) is the authentic “early” Interpol look, fitted to 1971–1974-era machines before the Interstate tank became standard fitment from 1975 onward. The radio tray is a countersink fit into the tank top — meaning the recess is integral to the steel tank, not a bolt-on accessory. Interpol restorers specifically seek this Norton Commando Interpol Tank variant to achieve the correct 1971-style police appearance. The tray itself displaces approximately half a gallon of fuel capacity. Even with the tray in place, the Interpol tank holds more fuel than the standard Commando Roadster tank.

This tank is distinguished from the other Interpol tank variant (062224, with top pommels) by its recessed radio housing. It uses the Interpol-specific filler cap (part 013325) rather than the standard Commando flip-up cap, and the Interpol rubber rear mounting straps (060498).
